Please be informed that the Australian government has decided to conclude the current Temporary Graduate Visa extension policy after 5 months of execution.
As outlined in the latest migration strategy released on 11 December, the new length of stay for Temporary Graduate Visa will be:
- 2 years for Bachelor Degree
- 2 years Masters by coursework
- 3 years for Masters by research
- 3 years for PhD
- + 1 – 2 years for study in a regional area (dependent on location)
The government is planning to implement the new settings in mid-2024.

A temporary graduate visa (subclass 485) is a visa for eligible international students to live, study, and work in Australia after graduation. The 485 visa also offers excellent opportunities for international students to accumulate EOI points for permanent skilled visas application.
Recently, there has been good news for some of the 485 visa holders or applicants who intend to stay longer in Australia.
To address the skill shortages in key industries, the Australian Government has announced that eligible international students that have graduated from an Australian higher education provider will be granted an extra 2 years of post-study work rights from 1 July 2023.

Eligibility
The two-year extension of post-study work rights only applies to international students who graduated from select degrees that are in areas of verified skill shortage.

In addition, you must also meet one of the following conditions:
- You hold a Temporary Graduate visa (Post-Study Work stream) on 1 July 2023, or
- You have lodged an application for a Temporary Graduate visa (Post-Study Work stream) before 1 July 2023, or
- You lodge an application for a Temporary Graduate visa (Post-Study Work stream) after 1 July 2023.
If your 485 visa expires before 1 July 2023, you can still apply for this extension if you have the eligible qualification. Instead of a further Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485), you will be granted a two-year Temporary Activity Australian Government Endorsed Events (COVID-19 Pandemic Event) visa (subclass 408).
You are also eligible for a two-year Temporary Activity Australian Government Endorsed Events (COVID-19 Pandemic event) visa (subclass 408) if:
- You were granted a Temporary Graduate visa (Post-Study Work stream) before 15 December 2021, and
- The visa took effect on or after 1 February 2020, and
- You were in Australia for the whole time that your visa was in effect between 1 February 2020 and 15 December 2021, and
- You hold an eligible qualification and
- You are working in Australia
How to apply
According to the Department of Education, the eligible 485 visa will be automatically extended by two years if you meet the requirements (new 485 visa applicants).
If you already hold a 485 visa on or before 1 July 2023, you will need to apply for the extension.
