Honest Words For Students Who Want To Apply For Migration

  • Post category:Migration

The Australian Department of Home Affairs has announced a new policy for international students who are looking for migration opportunities. It might be confusing, and we are here to assist you. Indeed, we have a few words for you.

1. Check the information carefully, do not just listen to words from mouth.

As shown in the chart below, it is the migration allocation of places to different applicants. The picture is retrieved from the Department of Home Affairs, https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/what-we-do/migration-program-planning-levels#.

A quick summary from the chart,

A. The government has given out 160,000 migration places for 2020-2021, which is the same as last year. The Government does welcome immigrants to the community.

B. The government has given out 79,600 places to the applicant from the Skill Stream, which weighs more than half of the places. Following, the government has given out 77,300 places for the family stream. The major stream is immigrating with skill, unlike the U.K. where applicants can only grant permanent residency through family reunion.

C. Visa 189 refers to Skilled Independent Visa. The government has given out 6,500 places for Visa 189 applicants. Earlier in the year 2019- 2020, the government announced to give out 18,652 places for Visa 189. In fact, only 7,720 applicants received offers, which was competitive. Based on the statistics from last year, we estimated that only 6,000 places or lower will be given.

D. Employer Nomination Scheme (Visa 186 and TSS) takes 22,000 places, and Skilled Work Regional (Visa 491) takes 11,200 places. Comparing to Visa 189, the two paths are easier ways to get permanent residency. In other words, having specialties and skills does not get you the immigration opportunity. The Australian government is looking for immigrants to have economic contributions in less popular industries and regions.

2. Learn what you are after and get yourself organised.

Since the Department of Home announced the new migration policy earlier this month, a lot of students have reached us for further inquiries. They find migrating so hard. Compared to ten years ago, students could get permanent residency once they graduated; five years ago, they could get the permanent residency by studying a Professional Year (PY) or translation program; or even two years ago, Visa 189 applicants got approval easier. In the coming year, applying for Visa 189 will be more challenging than in previous years. A lot of students feel pessimistic about not having the return as much as the effort that they put in.

Think about this way, is getting permanent residency the thing that you are after? Or do you reckon, it is okay whether you get the permanent residency or not? You do not have to overthink the problems. It is a fact that someone is getting an immigration approval each day. Yet, the government policy is changing yearly. Some students choose to study in designated areas, and some students choose to study the specialty that the country needs. They work out their ways to get the points for the point test. Before you start playing the game, you need to learn your goals and the rules from the government.

3. Be positive!

As mentioned immigrating through the Skill Stream is difficult, but if you listen to the government tips it would not be as challenging as it sounds. You may study in the fields from the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL). You rather find a job from the list or study in a designated area to get the immigration point. If you could fulfil the two, getting a permanent residency is just a piece of cake for you. In the coming two to three years, students who want to migrate through the Skill Stream can consider as follow:

A. Study a profession from the MLTSSL. For example, the engineering industry and the medical industry. Under the pandemic, doctors and front-line healthcare workers are crucial to sustaining the public health in the society. After the pandemic, the government demand more skillful architectures and engineers to boost the economy, which is a greater opportunity for students who are doing these two subjects. Besides, the Child Care industry is also on the list. Students who study this profession will get a higher chance of getting Visa 189 for immigration if they can fulfill other conditions.

B. It is not difficult for international students to get a job in Australia, but it may not be ideal, or it may not be the one that allows them to immigrate. The migration policy encourages students to work for their specialty and professional skills, then create economic contributions to the country. The government has provided adequate places for the Employer Nomination Scheme. Policies are different from different states, for Victoria, New South Wales, and Queensland, job applicants are required to have half a year to one-year work experience or contract with the employer. It depends on the students’ skills and abilities to get the ideal job. Lastly, regarding the Employer Nomination Scheme, migration applicants are required to have at least 3 years of work experience, which a lot of students cannot fulfil.

C. Migrating to Designated Regional Areas stream is easier than immigrating with Skilled Work Regional stream. Northern Territory, South Australia, and Tasmania are classified as designated regional areas. The more conditions the students fulfil, the higher chance they can get permanent residency.

A lot of students asked about the chance of getting a permanent residency; our response is that as long as we follow the government’s policy, and provide what the government wants for the country there will be a high possibility.
